Wedding at Scripps Seaside Forum

Late fall 2011 I DJ'd a wedding and then the reception right afterward at the Seaside Forum. The wedding went perfectly, they were from Hawaii so the music choices for the wedding were mostly Hawaiian. The Bride is a Dance Music Recording Artist and normally when I have clients like that I try to avoid playing their music during the event, mainly just because its a little weird. But this one wasn't like that, she was perfectly fine with it. As a matter of fact, at first she gave me the track titles and didn't even tell me they were her tracks.

It was kind of a dance music crowd and pretty much the entire group recognized, got up, danced and sang along when I played the first 2 of her songs. By the time I played the 3rd song I honestly think I had worn them out. They danced solid for about 2 hours and were still dancing but I think they were pretty out of gas at that point.

December Wedding

I'll try to post more on this wedding later but I wanted to get this video posted ASAP. Joe Park is an awesome videographer, one of the things I like best is that you can have him create a teaser video for the wedding. Since the full Wedding Video takes weeks and weeks to edit in some cases, the teaser video just shows some of the highlights at a quick glimpse. As usual, he hit another homer with this one from Dec 3rd.

Corporate Party at Fox Sports Grill in San Diego at Hilton Bay Front

This group came in for a few days, one of their nights was a party at Fox Sports Grill. It didn't take them long to get out on the dancefloor. Fox Sports Grill is a great place for a Corporate Party, plenty of space, night near the bay, indoor and outdoor mixed seating and plenty of video screens for sports or Video DJ would be amazing...

Baby Bash & Frankie J Live at UCHS in San Diego

Today we provided sound for Baby Bash to play a concert for University City High School, the students there won the concert in a Z-90 contest. This is the 3rd show I've done with Bash and this time he brought Frankie J with him.

These guys are both pros, nothing like the egos and attitudes that I've encountered with some other big names. You can see that they are just happy to be there and doing what they love to do. Even though the show was only 29 minutes long, I think they actually played about 35. But then they both stayed and did meet & greet/Photo and Autographs for close to an hour.... C'mon who else does that? That's why Bash is one of my favorites to work with, Like I said, he's a pro.

Dubstep Wedding

This is the one everyone is talking about. A DJ friend of mine was in the LA area on a gig and talking with another DJ there about music when the topic of Dubstep came up and how well it is (or is not) working in SoCal. As I understand it, part of that conversation they my friend bought up that a friend of his (me) had just done a wedding with mostly house and dubstep music and the response was something like oh yeah I heard about that.

That doesn't surprise me though, the bride and groom are part of a group of people I've gotten to know pretty well over the years. They all work together but what they really all have in common is we're all friends of DJ Miss Lisa. Miss Lisa is one of San Diego's original and Pioneering DJs and has been a friend for about 16 years (wow that's a long time now that I think about it), she plays all over the world with some of the very biggest and high profile events. So since this is really one big circle of DJs and DJs friends, it seems like everyone there is a DJ (including the Groom was a DJ too). I don't mean like everyone there has a mixer and turntables in their bedroom...I mean like some of these guests have DJ residencies in some of the Biggest and Hottest Clubs in New York, many of whom make their own music and tour the world doing gigs for groups of thousands of people. I'm talking about the RockStar Circuit of DJs. Yeah! No Pressure! I don't talk about it often but I spent 13 years doing on air mix Dj work and was syndicated on multiple stations around the country, San Diego, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Salt Lake City and more (as many as 48 stations through the 2005-2006 timeframe). So I feel like I can hold my own, but I still found myself mentally reviewing every move I made throughout the night.
There were a lot of DJs there, I don't want to leave anyone out so I won't list them by name except for DJ Slynkee, thanks for your help. The one thing I'll say is that most of them came over to say hello, and they were ALL super nice and easy going and genuinely just there to have a good time.

The wedding was great though, it started off with a perfect ceremony at the Island Club on the Navy Base in Coronado overlooking the beach. The Groom and groomsmen arrived on the back of a Fire Engine with full Lights & Sirens. I provided music and a wireless mic (done the right way). For anyone thinking about an outdoor ceremony on any of the Navy Bases, you have to spend the extra money to do the wireless microphones correctly. Cutting corners in that department opens you up to all kinds of potential interference problems with the frequencies that the Navy uses. You only get one chance to get the Ceremony right. The $100-$200 you could've spent to do it right will seem like small change if things go wrong with the wireless mics.

After the Ceremony it was inside for the Cocktail Reception and then Dinner. After the traditional dances and toasts, I hit them hard Right out of the gate when open dancing started. With some of the pop / top 40 stuff and slowly working into Sexy & I know it (that was about 3 weeks before it started to play on radio, but again...the DJs at this wedding had all been playing it in their clubs and gigs for weeks at that point.)

The rest of the night was a high energy dance party. I did work in some more recognizable 80s for the family and guests that weren't as into the house and Dubstep.

The only bad thing was that the club staff turned the lights on 10 minutes before the end of their party, but it didn't even phase this crowd.

Destination Wedding at the Hard Rock Hotel with Uplights

A couple of months ago I DJ'd a Destination Wedding for a couple at the Hard Rock Hotel. Kristen at White Wedding Day Events did the big white backdrop behind the head table and dancefloor. I brought in 8 light violet LED lights and DJ'd the night for them.

You can get so much from Uplighting for the cost, with just 8-10 lights you can completely transform a room. It allows you to bring down the house lighting and the result is a completely costumized room. It can be one of the colors of your wedding or something to compliment your colors

DJ & Uplights for a 18 yr Birthday

DJ and Uplights with a completely PINK theme. This party was for a group of people some of which were under 18, so to protect their privacy the video only shows shots of the uplights from before the party began.

It was great though, a few uplights and the rest were carefully placed area lighting. These Full Color LED lights that we use are so versatile and are some of the brightest available.

60th Birthday Party DJ & Karaoke in Del Mar - Private Residence

This party was at the private residence of the client's family in Del Mar for about 40 people. It's one of the biggest plots of land in Del Mar and is right on the Coast. It has a Mini Train complete with the Scaled down buildings for the mini town, A Hedge Maze, tennis Court and Party lawn. They had me set up on the Tennis Court and play toward the dancefloor on the Party Lawn. Karaoke Singers sang from the Tennis Court entrance area.

Corporate Dinner Party and Dancing on a Yacht

A weekday night party on Flagship Cruises Yacht - The Spirit of California. We picked this group oof 200 up on the Chart House Pier in Coronado newar the Hotel del Coronado. They were treated to a world class dinner and then back upstairs for dancing and the party.

This is a good example to show that while most of the parties that I play are a variety of music, really what I do is play to the crowd. It's not always Black Eyed Peas and Earth Wind and Fire. Sometimes its more Lynyrd Skynyrd and Alabama... That's what I love about what I do its always something new.

Peter & Candice' Wedding and Uplights - Park Hyatt Aviara

Peter & Candice were great, they had so many different pieces of entertainment. Best Man-Bruce strummed guitar lightly as toasts were given. Another played the Clarinet, Cindy gave what I can only describe as the best live variety show act I've seen in quite some time and Peter the groom played a song on violin that he dedicated to Candice. Later the first dance was preceded by about 30 seconds of a skit by the Bride & Groom. the guests absolutely loved it and that's the best thing. I Emcee'd the evening, did 10 Deep pink uplights and DJ'd the dancing at the end.

After dinner we watched 2 short video clips shown on the 7 ft screen and projector that I brought and finished the night with some dancing.

The rest of the A list vendor team was amazing designer Thomas Bui and the Photo and Video was done by Visual Masterpiece they did this video recap, check out their blog post (nov 8th) for some really incredible photos.

I recently DJ'd a small wedding at the Hotel Del in Coronado in the Windsor Complex Room. I provided 8 uplights (RGBA LED full Color of course) which is perfect for that room since the ceiling isn't really tall enough to put up raised dance floor lighting. Sabrina Cadini of La Dolce Idea was the Wedding Coordinator and always does a great job, Photographer Tim Otto was capturing the night and I emcee'd and played the music for the night.

I know the dance floor doesn't look that full in most of the clips, but there were only about 35 guests at the so I was rotating the crowd pretty well throughout the night.

Fashion's Night Out at the Beverly Center

Fashion's Night Out is a Global Shopping Party. The Beverly Center in Los Angeles they roll out the red carpet with an annual fashion show that showcases some of the new fall lines available at the stores in the Center. I've been a part of the production team that is called in to conduct the fashion show for the past couple of years and its been a lot of fun each time. It's a couple of long days, but show time is worth it watching the Stars come in on the Red Carpet / Step & Repeat for photos before the 5 o'clock show. This year's Official hosts were Randy Jackson & Nicole Richie along with Lisa Love (West Coast Editor of Vogue Magazine). I'm admittedly bad at recognizing celebrities, I always know "hey that's somebody" but I can't usually tell you who or what they're known for. The second show at 8 O'clock was hosted by a few of the Cast members of Glee. The fashion show was a big hit and went off without a hitch.

Sorry the video doesn't have any shots of the actual fashion show, I was too busy hitting music cues to work the camera. It mainly shows the set before the first show and some of the lighting and the crowd as they start to gather and watch from the railings. The Step & Repeat is black wall that's all lit up.

Wedding Reception at Hotel Parisi in La Jolla.

This was a Destination Wedding for a couple from Phoenix, AZ. They brought the whole group of guests with them and booked every room in the boutique style hotel so they had Parisi to themselves and they were here to party. They got married at the park down near the beach then came to Hotel Parisi for a Cocktail Reception in the main Lobby, Dinner downstairs in their event room (during Dinner the Lobby was transformed from A Cocktail Reception layout to a Dance Party configuration) and then back to the upstairs Lobby for the Party.

This wedding was a lot more hip hop and Top 40 than I play at most weddings, but that's really just a great example showing that you need a DJ that can take the play and don't play lists that you give them and mix that with the requests that come from the guests and with the other songs the DJ knows will get the group dancing. Sometimes that means Hip Hop and top 40, other times it means the Beatles and Aretha Franklin. It's impossible to predict so you need a great DJ for your wedding that can play the right mix of music for your party.

Wedding & Uplights at the Santa Luz Club

The Santa Luz Club is a secluded club in the private community of Santa Luz, they have a tented pavilion in the back of the club that is really great. This wedding was a raging party. I provided 8 Amber LED uplights to give the tent some color. The grand entrance went flawlessly, dinner was perfect too, then when dancing started this group got to their feet and didn't stop. We danced for almost 3 hours that night to a really diverse set of music. I worked in some of their requests but reading the crowd was how I came up with most of the music for the night. Check out the video for a sample of the music.

At one point the tent had gotten a little hot and I noticed that 8-10 people had gone outside of the tent to dance out on the lawn under the stars. As long as they dance, that's why I'm there.

Corporate Dance Party at the Park Hyatt Aviara

This was initially intended to be a simple Cocktail party no real dancing was int eh plans for the organizers of the evenings party. Even when I'm asked to just play background music so guests can talk and enjoy themselves I always try to play mostly fun, recognizable and upbeat songs so its an enjoyablee festive atmostphere. That almost always leads to at least some light dancing, but sometimes it erupts into a full blown dance party. That's why it's important to hire the right DJ for a party. You need a DJ and Emcee that can go with the flow but knows how to subtly instill that fun, festive and outgoing vibe for the guests.

The Park Hyatt Aviara, formerly known as the Four Seasons Aviara is a great hotel. True Five Star Service and the Entire Resort and its food uphold that same standard.

Private Estate Wedding - La Jolla

This was a perfect location, a private house on the west side of Mt Soledad overlooking the Cove in a La Jolla. The day started out with a flawless ceremony held in front of the house and then things moved to the back of the house for a cocktail reception, a great Dinner & Dancing til the end of the night.

The Bride did and still does work in the Wedding and Special Event Industry, it's always such a compliment when someone who works in the industry hires me for their own occasion. That's someone who knows exactly what to look for, knows all of the available service providers in the area and exactly which corners can be cut and which ones can't.

DSA FundRaising Gala

I've played several events for these guys and they are a blast to work with. It's always such a celebration and they always come with their dancing shoes on. This Springs Gala was no exception. My team & I provided all the AV and microphones, Video DJ, Uplights around the room, 2 big video screens and the 4 speaker PA system in the main Ballroom as well as another 4 speaker PA for the Silent Auction Welcome Reception room. My friend Mike Hogan was the auctioneer and did a great job as always. He's a great choice for Auctioneer if you find yourself in need of one. He mixes his years of entertainment experience for perfect timing and his training as one of San Diego's top Auctioneers to make every auction a success. Before Dinner we had a special performance by Sujeet Desai a very accomplished international musician.
After Dinner and the Auction, we opened up the dancefloor and it was packed the rest of the night.

Wedding DJ and Uplights at the Prado

This wedding was Rockin'! From the first dance to the Last song of the night the floor was packed with Dancers. I provided 10 Amber uplights 1 on each Column and 4 on the stage lighting the Stage Curtain. It was really great. The Prado and their team are great, the food is ALWAYS incredible and they have built in mini spot lights to light the tables in the main ballroom.
The wedding all went off without a hitch thanks to Susanne at Crown Weddings one of the best wedding planners in Southern California.

This was a great wedding, La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla let them have the Mediterranean Room for Dinner and the Courtyard for Dancing. It was a perfect fit nad Susanne Duffy the Wedding Coordinator and her team were fantastic. I provided 6 LED uplights inside that were adjusted to be the perfect match to the same shade of orange as the floral design by Karen Tran. Then I provided 9 LED uplights outside in Blue for the Lounge and Dance area. Concepts Party Rentals provided Lounge Furniture and Market lights (the string of lights overhead). Dan Doyle and Jennifer Dery made the Videographer and Photographer part of the vendor team complete, I love working with a team of really great vendors.
The Brides brother Emcee'd the Grand Entrance and then turned it back over to me to introduce the toast and other formalities throughout the night. They opted to skip the formal cake cutting and Bouquet / Garter tosses which worked out great because once the dancing started they didn't want to stop.
The Music had some similarities to other weddings but also included some really great unique songs including songs from Tito Puente and MGMT.

I love the high powered LED RGBA Uplights that we use. They are super bright and they really project a long distance as well as being able to dial in any color.

Video DJ on the Midway - Corporate Group

This was a party for about 500 people onboard the USS Midway. Guests came in and enjoyed all of the fun things in the hangar area that the Midway has to offer, Flight simulators, Vintage plane exhibits and the motion capsule experience. I Video DJ'd for background music and video to give it a fun festive atmosphere. 4 TVs spread through out the hangar. After the initial Cocktail Reception in the hangar guests were invited upstairs to the flight deck for Dinner and the main stage. The band was a great cover band that specialized in newer songs by bands like Kings of Leon, the surprise act was a group of urban acrobats or free runners. Those are the guys you see on TV commercials that scale the sides of buildings in everyday locations. Yes they really exist and sorry no video of those guys.

That Light in the Video is Amazing, the DL3 is a super bright light that spins and rotates 360 degrees and will show light in almost any color but it also will project a video image the same way.

Music Around the World at the Hilton Bayfront

This was a corporate / convention party for a few hundred people and featured several different music acts representing music style from around the world. The video clip shows some Carnival dancers, but there were all also some Irish Dancers and an African Dance Act. Then I DJ'd the transition from the last act into the party for the night. The in house AV company had a really great set up including ceiling mounted sound and full lighting / Video Rig.

Video DJ - Convention Final Night Party at the Ritz

This was the last night of the Convention for this group at the Ritz Carlton in Dana Point. I played background music during dinner and then after dinner, some awards and a customized company video that they showed, I opened the dance floor and the party was on.
Since they had a 4 day convention in the same room, they already had the screens, sound system and all of the lighting installed in the room. It really looked great.

Dinner ran a little long so I really only had about an hour of dance music and videos so I really went after them quickly with the big homerun songs. They had asked me to keep the music a little more on the current side since their group was younger and kind of into the club scene.

New Boyz, Z90.3 FM & Mobile Music Plus

Ok so first a little back story... I was in Radio for about 13 years, I was a syndicated Mix DJ which basically means that I did those cool beat mixed continuous music shows. Different radio stations have mixes at different times but a lot of Friday and Saturday Night Party Shows. I mixed a few different music formats, I did 3 main shows, a Hip Hop Show,a House Music Show called the Digital Groove with my good friend DJ Marc Thrasher and an Old School Show. These mixed for San Diego stations Z-90, Channel 93.3 and Magic 92.5 as well as about 28 stations around the country including Houston, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and others.

So that brings us to Friday May 27th, I still have a lot of friends at Z-90 and Magic 92.5 and they usually give me call to make their on-site shows happen if the venue doesn't already have a Sound System. Every Spring Z-90 holds a school spirit contest where area high schools compete to win an end of year- on campus concert by a Top Recording Group or Artist. This Year Rancho Buena Vista High in Vista overwhelmingly won the concert from the New Boyz. It's a really quick show, it takes place during or just after lunch so 30 minutes to move the kids in, do the show, and move the kids out. This show was outside on the football field so I had to bring in my friends at ProSystems AV for the Mini Concert Sound System. This system is HUGE!

The New Boyz took the stage and didn't disappoint. 20 minutes of excitement and the kids were going crazy.

This is about the 6th year we've done this show for Z-90, past artists include Warren G, Soulja Boy, San Diego Native - Lil' Rob, Baby Bash played a couple of shows

Monique Lhuillier Fashion Show

I was recently part of a production team for "The A Gala" at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. It's not really a DJ or Emcee event for me, I work with a team that makes sure the Fashion Show happens without a hitch. We're able to do this with the close direction of the Director who keeps her eye on the big picture. Everything from the perfect lighting to the music played and changed at precisely the right times.

The Gala honored a few of it's members including fashion designer Monique Lhuillier and after the evening's program Lhuillier thrilled attendees with a fashion show of her new Fall Line. Sorry no pictures but there were about 25+ designs including 4 wedding gowns that were all just amazing.

Named as Co-Director - The Association of Bridal Consultants

I was honored to be named as the new / incoming Co-Director of the San Diego Association of Bridal Consultants (ABC). The group consisting of a mixture of Bridal Consultants and other wedding related service providers focuses on promoting education and good business practices. I'll be serving along side fellow Co-Director Sabrina Cadini of La Dolce Idea, a fantastic wedding planner. I'm excited to jump in and help boost the local organization to new levels. There is already a great Board of Directors in place and membership is on the rise.

Getting caught up on blogging some of these parties from a few months ago. This was a small but really fun group, they had their employee party in January with DJ and Karaoke. The group took a little while to warm up to the singing but they eventually got started. The Video is a little dark but you can still make out what's happening.

I was lucky enough a few weeks ago to be part of a team to produce a Show in Beverly Hills at the Wilshire Hotel that was attended by Former First Lady Nancy Reagan and Fashion Legend Oscar De La Renta and the Master of Ceremony was Wick Martindale famous Gameshow host. The Show was great, it started with the Cocktail Reception and Lunch and flowed into the Fashion show to debut Oscar de la Renta's Fall line. Click Here for the LA Times Coverage of the event.

There isn't much correlation between DJ'ing a fashion show and a Corporate event or a wedding, but its a great qualifier. High profile fashion shows like this demand flawless execution by the DJ. Even small gaps in music and cues missed by factions of a second aren't acceptable. Luckily this is similar to DJing on the radio, "Live without a Net" I call it. My 13+ year radio career has taken me to a position where 100% flawless is the standard by which we measure all of our performances.

I know what is at stake for a Bride and Groom or for the HR rep for a company as they plan their party or Reception and that they are normally concerned with how they will look to their coworkers and peers.

My DJ's and I are in the business of making our clients look good EVERYTIME.

DJ at the San Diego Convention Center

This Spring I played a "wrap" party for the librarian's conference. It wasn't a big dance party, just a place for the conference attendees to come, eat and hang out until they had to leave for the airport. The Conference had ended a few hours prior the stage was still set for their closing session speaking engagement. If you're planning a corporate event with a stage, this is a good example of the perfect dual video screen set up. The lighting is perfectly mixed between static uplights and some subtle moving lights, not too busy not to plain.

Daytime Wedding at the Prado in Balboa Park.

Spring 2011, I DJ'd a daytime in wedding in the Loggia Room at The Prado. A lot of people seem to think that no one dances at daytime weddings. That just doesn't seem to be the case. I will admit is a little tougher to get the dancefloor started, but once it gets going it can be just as fun as a nighttime Reception. This group comes to San Diego every 3 years of so as they rotate their annual gathering around the US. It's international group of Insect scientists and related fields. I've provided DJ and some various other services for them for a few different years now. They're always rev'd up and ready to go and this year was now exception. This was a rockin' party! There were a few hundred guests attending the party in the courtyard at the T&C. A great Wedding and Reception at Loews Coronado, Loews provides a fantastic Ceremony Site that overlooks San Diego Bay. I provide Music and Wireless Microphones for quite a few ceremonies. I haven't blogged for a few weeks and a lot has happened so I'm going to try to cover several things quickly so it doesn't turn into a mini novel.

First... Mid January
Its Award Season time, the Grammys are on the TV as I type,
The Association of Bridal Consultants recently held their annual awards program and I was the recipient of the "ABC Rockstar Award" to summarize the criteria, its given to the ABC member deserving of recognition for their general day to day efforts.

Next.. Late January
Spent a week in Phoenix where -
I delivered an educational seminar to attendees of "The Special Event 2011" in Phoenix, AZ. I spoke about Music Royalties, who has to pay, when, and to whom. I'm very happy to say I got great feedback from the attendees of the session and the Show personnel alike. I have to admit, I was a little nervous. I don't know what it is. I've spoken on stage in front of crowds of 8000 and 10,000 and it was no big deal. But speaking to your peers is just different. I'm glad I did it and hopefully will get to offer it again to some other industry groups.

And then...
I spent a week in Vegas where I was representing MMP Lighting and selling High Powered LED lights. These lights are incredible. They're so bright! 36 three watt LEDs recessed inside a reflector that focuses the beam to make it one of the brightest LED lights on the market at one of the lowest prices available. While I was there my good friend Jay Brannan a Demonstrator and DJ for Pioneer Pro DJ along with DJ Lars another Pioneer DJ gave me a quick slot to spin a house set at the performance stage at the Riviera. Lots of fun.

Lastly, for this post anyway.
I got a last minute call on Friday before the Superbowl from my long time friend, DJ Marc Thrasher who was in San Francisco for an event that needed the Video DJ gear for him to spin the Audi Superbowl Commercial debut party scheduled to be held at Alcatraz Prison the following day. I'd just finished my only event for the weekend so I packed the family, the Video DJ rig and hit the road at 11:30pm on Friday for San Fran. We drove all night, did some touristy stuff the next morning then caught the ferry over to the Prison for set up. The event was CRAZY, they really converted the space. All the history and struggle in that building over the years. We got to go a few places the general public isn't allowed. Very cool! End of the night we caught the Ferry back, the next day I did some more family stuff, I got to meet previous Raiders Linebacker Jeff Barnes, then we headed back that evening.
If you saw the commercial which ran the first spot break of the game. This photo taken in the Alcatraz Shower Area is of the actual Stuffed Dodo bird that they used in the commercial, which I was told cost $7000 (with Marc Thrasher in the background). Hey for 7 Grand shouldn't I get a live Dodo even if they are extinct?

Loews Coronado Wedding DJ and Emcee

I love working at Loews in Coronado, I always notice that the staff there is amazing. Not just the Chef for making a great meal or the banquet captain for providing great meal service but also the every server and worker ever when I load equipment into the back service hallway. They all smile and say hello... you can't teach that! They genuinely love their jobs and it shows in everything the hotel does.
For this Wedding I provided music for the Ceremony, cocktail reception and the Dinner Reception which was a great party, as I normally do, I served as the DJ and the Emcee for this wedding. I really try to always provide the gentle guidance required by an effective Emcee with the fewest number of announcements. I just don't think I should be the focus of someones wedding. The Emcee should be there to help make the night better, not to take over the night.

Wedding at the Ritz in Dana Point

Dave & Mari had a great wedding in one of the best ballrooms available at the Ritz in Dana Point. The room has sets of double doors all down one wall which open up to the terrace which overlooks a cliff directly above the ocean. Kelly Aull of Mint Weddings was the coordinator, I'd always heard a lot about her but never had the opportunity to work with her. I must say she was easy to work with and had the night's events well under control all night. That makes my job so much easier.

Corporate Association Karaoke Party

This group rotates their national meeting between 3 cities around the country. That means every 3 years they come to San Diego for their week long conference. I've been lucky enough to provide their entertainment for the past 3 San Diego visits. At first it was just their final night party, then 3 years ago I provided Karaoke for one of the other days of the conference to wrap up the days meetings and let the attendees unwind a little bit. This year they repeated the same order and the karaoke could have gone all night. The Final night party was a blast too. 4 hours of Video Dj for about 500+ of their attendees, they loved it.

VIDEO DJ / 2 rooms, 7 screens, 2 sound systems - ROCKIN'

This party was arranged through one of my entertainment booking agencies that uses me a lot, for his and his clients privacy I won't mention their names but if I printed their names you'd instantly know who they are, both very big / high tech companies here in San Diego. This party was jumpin' from the very beginning. 650+ people in 2 rooms at the Hardrock Hotel in San Diego for this year-end holiday party. The agent brought in a great light show as well as an AV production company to handle the (2) big 12' x 15' screens in the Legends Ballroom to go with my 4 speaker system and (2) flatscreens near the dancefloor. AV then ran video and audio signal to The Edge ballroom across the foyer where there were (3)50" screens and a 4 speaker EAW sound system.
No Videos during dinner but once I started playing dance music videos after dinner the dancefloor in the main room filled up immediately, my style of video DJ'ing keeps me very active and involved so although I didn't have a chance to go look in the other room, I'm told that the dancefloor was packed over there too.

Carlsbad Forum Tree Lighting

For the second year in a row, I've been called on to do audio and lighting for the tree lighting ceremony to kick off the Christmas Shopping Season at the Carlsbad Forum. My good friend Joan Burns of Sampson & Associates is the event planner and always does a fantastic job of keeping all of the moving pieces of the growing community event together, on track and on time. 2 Singers, the Carlsbad Canyon High School Marching Band was on hand as always to help make it a special night. This band is really good, they were invited by the queen to play in England this spring and their 5 song set included songs by Shakira and Lady Gaga. I mean come on! Shakira and Lady Gaga from a high school Marching band... That Rocks! No more fight songs and boring stuff that we've all seen at every high school football game since the beginning of time.
Santa and Sarah from Jack 100.7FM as the Emcee rounded out the entertainment bill. Even with my 12 years in Radio I'd never met Sarah before but she was really good at keeping the crowd involved and the night flowing from performance to performance.
I provide a 4 speaker sound system with 6 microphones and stage wash lighting to give light to the show.

94th Aero Squadron - Friday Nights

For over 10 years I have managed the DJs for Friday nights at the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant and Bar in Kearny Mesa in San Diego. This World War 2 Themed restaurant has a Friday happy hour that has always been busy. The local work force starts to come in at about 5 and by 7 or 8 the club is usually full. The music format has always been R&B, Hip Hop and Old School with a little bit of Dancehall and Latin mixed in. The music further breaks down into mostly R&B (both new and old)and old school from 6:30 til about 8:30 or 9pm to fit our 30+ something crowd. Then as the night club crowd rolls in, anything goes from 9 or 10 til close. Since the early crowd tends to be a little older average age than the late crowd, I usually play the early shift since my years as Dr Boogie at Magic 92.5FM give me a lot of range in that music genre.
The DJ Booth is fully equipped with a pair of Technics 1200 turntables and a dual deck CD player. We play on the 1200s using the CD player as a back up for drops and other production needs.

Wedding DJ - Mobile Music Plus at Scripps Seaside Forum

Kelly and Elaine's wedding at the Scripps Seaside Forum in La Jolla was a blast. I provided an extensive sound system to cover both outside for the Ceremony and inside for the Reception. NRG provided a pianist to play the Ceremony I ran the PA for them to be heard on the lawn during the Ceremony and then used the wireless link to runt eh same music inside to the speaker system as people gathered when we got started. After the Ceremony, guests most moved inside for cocktails and dinner while a few stayed outside. Since the music was now being being played inside we needed to run another wireless link so the music could be held outside so that as guests came outside to enjoy the patio lounge throughout the night the music could still be heard. kool. Party Rentals provided their one of a kind Glow tables, Plush Lounge provided some of the outdoor lounge furniture. San Diego Stage and Lighting provided uplighting and some intel Dancefloor lights. Altogether it was quite a sight all designed and created by Anseth Richards the Event Coordinator from Creative Occasions and The Bridal Bar.

From meeting with Kelly & Elaine prior to the wedding we determined that they wanted to create an atmosphere where guests could dance to some of the classics throughout dinner and then turn the party up a notch after the guests finished dinner.

Tim & Ivana were awesome! Super Organized about every detail, yet easy going throughout the night. She wanted their video montage as well as a surprise video presentation by their friends as part of the Grand Entrance. A close friend of theirs' Emceed the Grand Entrance and then I took over from there. The Video Screen was 6' x 8' after the party got started I video DJ'd the dance party wit music videos play a combination of requests and songs I knew would be big with that audience. One of the requests was for "Like a G6" by Far East Movement. That's a fun song and a big song in top 40 right now (October 2010), but when she told me why I was surprised to hear that she wanted me to play the song/music video because her brother was in the Video... He's in the group "Cataracs" hip hop group that collaborated on "Like a G6"
I also provided music for the Ceremony and Cocktail Hour. If you're looking for a prefect wedding location. The Dana on Mission Bay has a ceremony lawn that overlooks the water, the recently remodeled Ballroom and surrounding area is unmatched around San Diego and THE STAFF, is really great at what they do. Video DJ & Karaoke Wedding and uplighting at Tom Hams Lighthouse

A fun little September wedding reception in the small room at Tom Hams Lighthouse in Point Loma for Joe & Jean. I don't think they thought their family would cut loose, dance and have a good time. That was one of the main reasons they selected Video DJ for the reception so that the guests would be visually entertained even if they didn't dance a lot. As the wedding date got closer, they asked to add Karaoke entertainment since they had some singers in the family. The room was a little crowded with their 60~ guests. The (2) Video Screens, Karaoke lyrics monitor and the (8) LED Uplights along with the dancefloor didn't leave much extra space.

They had several really good singers to start off and then the dancing started...

Rock n Roll Wedding at Orfila Vineyard

Bryan & Teri were a really nice couple that were fantastic to work for. They were pretty easy going, they had some requests but for the most part just gave me some music likes and dislikes and told me to run with it. This is a great wedding to illustrate that every wedding I play is different. The Clip is the last song of the night, which was one of the brides "really like this song" choices. Check it out.

Brazilian Wedding at the Hotel Del Coronado

Todd & Gisele's wedding was awesome. Gisele is originally from Brazilian so they brought in a Brazilian band complete with 2 dancers. It was a huge hit and was like Carnival right there in the Coronet Ballroom at the Del. I brought in (2) 42" Video Screens to show their video montage and then video Dj'd with Music Videos after the Brazilian Band finished their short appearance. I even included a few Brazilian Pop Music Videos. Before the night started, I set 8 LED uplights that were set to rotate between blue and violet every 10 minutes throughout the night.

Wedding DJ at the La Jolla Bridge Club

I DJ'd a really fun one this past weekend for Monica & Elliot. Ceremony on the lawn just outside the La Jolla Bridge Club overlooking La Jolla Shores. I provided the sound system along with a wireless lavaliere (lapel) microphone for the pastor, a wireless handheld Microphone for the Bride and Groom to recite their own vows, then we connected a keyboard and saxophone Mic for a special song to be played during the ceremony.
After the ceremony the guests moved around to the patio and lawn area for a cocktail reception while photos were taken on the beach and cliffs. Dinner at the Bridge Club for larger groups is enjoyed on the lawn along with the first dance and toast. Then we moved into the clubhouse for dancing starting with the Father Daughter Dance. The Bride's father had the idea of beginning the dancing with a traditional song and then having James Brown - "I feel good" kicking about halfway through so that the guests could join in for the party. The Guests were fired up and ready to dance, they danced for about the entire hour and a half except when we stopped briefly for another of the Bride's father's surprise performances... see the video for more.

Hotel Del - Grand Ballroom

Had a great little wedding at the Hotel Del Coronado last night with a couple from Budapest. They split their time in Budapest and LA, so the group of 60 was just the friends and family that lived here in California and the ones from abroad that could make the trip.
The ceremony was out on the Vista Walk with a string quartet who moved inside the Ballroom for the cocktail reception. I Emcee'd as the night got started with the Grand Entrance straight into the first dance Whitney Houston "I believe in you & me" the guests were invited to join half way through the song and 1 more dance song before dinner to get their blood pumping.

A nice little Jazz Trio played during dinner with me filling in during their breaks with the formal toast and some background music. It was a fun little party and you really can't beat the awe inspiring Grand Ballroom at the Del. There really isn't anything like it when its fully lit and decorated. The Wedding Coordinator was Victoria Schroeder of Coronado Weddings, truly one of the best around. Paul Barnett was the photographer and is well known for his amazing work I can't wait to see the pictures. Here are a couple advance shots...

Corporate Show with Karaoke at The Grove of Anaheim

This show was so much fun! An American Idol spin with the guests singing Karaoke, ok so far no big deal, I've been doing parties like that since the Kelly Clarkson days of Idol. This show was different, it was on the main stage at The Grove of Anaheim. A 1500 seat theatre adjacent to Angel Stadium in Anaheim that is complete with a full stage, Pro Sound array and full stage lighting rig. This stage has seen an amazing list of performers, Los Lonely Boys, 3OH!3, Sinbad the Comedian, Jordin Sparks the Go-go's, Snoop Dogg and Three Dog Night. I only missed Willie Nelson and Jefferson Starship by a few days.
There were only about 800 people in the group but seating for Dinner service made the room look full. The doors opened at 7 and the show began at 8 with me as the Emcee introducing Paula and Simon. Well, not the real Paula or Simon, but two look alikes from Hollywood that were excellent at the delivery. Our Paula was a little Ditzy and liked almost everyone, while our Simon was true to form and a little rough on some of the singing groups and I got to play Ryan for the evening. The Karaoke was a HUGE hit we had more singers than we had time to get them on stage.
I love playing real music venues and walking in the same halls and sitting the same dressing room as amazing artists like Al Green. I just have to hire someone to come get me just before the show and say "They're ready for you on stage Mr Bezy."

Dj & Dancing - Wedding at The Lodge at Torrey Pines

I recently DJ'd a really fun wedding at the Lodge, in the Ballroom overlooking the 18th green of Torrey Pines South Golf Course. Uplighting and a wonderful dinner really set the tone for the party. Dinner took awhile to serve all of the courses so when it finished the guests were ready to dance.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines always makes me feel like I'm in a secluded 5 Star resort, which I guess it sort of is. But its so quiet around the grounds, even when the golfers are next door at the course. Inside it's a very luxurious look and feel, everything from the beautiful wood accented walls to the top of the line service by their staff.

A great wedding for some long time clients and friends that I've known for years. The Villa Amore is an estate in Temecula tucked in amongst the vineyards. The grounds of the Estate are really beautiful and a perfect setting for a wedding ceremony. The Ceremony and Dinner were in the courtyard and the dancing was on the outdoor patio on the opposite side of the property to help contain the noise for the surrounding properties.

BizBash - LA

BIZBASH was fantastic, a great opening keynote speaker Mindy Weiss the Amazing wedding planner to the Stars. Volt! The Official BizBash after party was great. It was the creative vision of many but Jack Weiner and Anthony Griffin of kool. Party Rentals were the driving force behind the event. The after party was held in the Penthouse of Pacific Electric Lofts in downtown LA, which is a beautiful space but without furniture it was really just an empty box. kool. Party Rentals took care of that with their signature LED lit furniture. Dining Tables, Cocktail Tables, decorative 20 foot tall columns and even a white bed floating on an LED cloud, it really seems like their is no end to the magic that they can bring to an event.

I made a few laps around the exhibit floor just after the keynote session and then headed off to prepare for THE After Party of the year. It was hard to tell how many attendees we had, the space was so big that it was hard to see everyone at once. I Video DJ'd some light house music to give it that kool loungy, club vibe. The videos were a big hit and the food and drinks were amazing too. I met a lot of great special event industry professionals and have already had some talks about performing for some of their events later this year.

DJ at Padres Home Opener

I was lucky enough to get to play the Omni Premiere Club in Petco Park on April 12th, for the Padres home opener just before the first pitch. I also provided uplighting and 2 Padres Gobos for another party held in the Candy Factory near the "Park in the Park". Kool Party Rentals brought in some amazing white leather furniture with their glowing LED and acryllic tables. The room looked amazing. Due to MLB and Padres logo use requirements I can't share any pictures but it was really impressive. It was a lot of fun to be in Petco park setting up before the crowds, Colbie Caillat sang the National Anthem that day, about 3 hours before game time she went to the field for a sound check with her guitarist, sang the whole national anthem and then "Bubbly" from start to finish and it sounded as good as it does on the youtube link below.

Karaoke at the House of Blues San Diego

Provided Deluxe Karaoke at the House of Blues in San Diego last week complete with Audio Recordings of each singer as a take home. 200+ guests filled the HOB with a Dance DJ in the main room and the Karaoke Lounge in the adjacent room. It took about about 30 minutes for the group to warm up to the idea but once they got started they sang for 4.5 hours straight. Video DJ at Anthology in San Diego

I've been the on-air Mix DJ for Magic 92.5 since 1998 under the name, Dr Boogie. Anthology, San Diego's Live music venue, had me come in along with Xavier The X-man to Video DJ for the night March 13th. Anthology is by far my favorite venue to Video DJ in San Diego. 10 screens including the big 15 foot screen above the stage the videos are everywhere! Anthology has 2 shows per night on the weekends, a 7-9 and a 10-12. LadySmith Black Mombasa was the 7pm show, they are the African Accapella group that used to back Paul Simon in the 80's. I made sure to show up early for my show so I could catch the last part of their set. It was very different, but very cool. Those guys deliver a great vocal performance but they really have some amazing choreography. At times it was hard to tell what was rehearsed and what was improvised. The 7pm show was sold out so at 9:15 when it was over it took a little time to clear the room for the line of Magic listeners forming at the front door. It didn't take long to get the crowd dancing, I've got some video clips to edit together. I'll post those as soon as they're available. Wedding DJ at the Parker Meridian in Palm Springs

The last weekend in February I DJ'd a wedding reception for a great couple, Mike & Kelly Nathenson. Their wedding was at the Parker Meridian Hotel in Palm Springs. They had some great music requests that they wanted to work into the reception including a couple of songs from Phoenix. Phoenix is probably my favorite breaking band of 2009. They've been around for a little while but they're really gaining popularity in recent months. I provided 10 uplights around the room to with a warm "Candle Light" color which made them a appear a little warmer than a natural white light bulb would look and provide plenty of light so that the hotel lighting could be turned down.

The wedding was with one of my favorite coordinators Susanne Duffy of Crown Weddings. We started things off with the first dance and immediately opened the dancefloor for the guests to join them and dance a quick couple of songs. Although I don't always do an early dance set for most of the weddings I perform at, it always seems to lead to a more successful party. Once they finished dinner and the specialty dances, it was back to the dance floor...ALL NIGHT. They started dancing and the next thing I knew the night was over. Sorry the Video gets a little dark later in the clip, the uplights got unplugged to increase the ambiance.

That Hoe Down sounding song is "Gin & Juice" by Phish a fun spoof on the classic Snoop Dogg song. They told me during our first meeting that their friends would love it, and they did.

Video DJ at La Jolla Spa MD Grand Reopening

Late February I Video DJ'd the Grand Reopening of La Jolla Spa MD in La Jolla. The Guest List of 500+ was invited in Paparazzi style with a Red Carpet entrance and check in, next upstairs for several stops on their "Trip Around the World" with each stop offering a different regional cuisine. Their final stop was back in the main lobby and boutique area adjacent to the Auditorium where they were treated to "The World's Hottest Night Club" featuring San Diego's original Video DJ, Spencer Bezy. Additional 42" flat screens and speakers were run to the front lobby to tie the entire lower level together.

Soul Train - Video DJ in Las Vegas

I was the opening DJ for the Soul Train Party in Las Vegas at the "Top of the Riv" Riviera Hotel. Close to 2000 DJs from aroudn teh world gather in Las Vegas every February to learn from each other, talk about new trends and new equipment on teh market. Days are filled with Seminars and Demo Sessions on various topics. The Nights are a serious of parties with different themes. 2010's conference opening night was a Soul Train Party and since my on-air role at Magic 92.5FM in San Diego is so similar to the classic Soul Train playlist it was a natural fit. I opened with 45 minutes of old school Video DJ, playing videos from Marvin Gaye, Klymaxx, The Whispers and O'Jays. I am proud to have one of the largest old school music video libraries in the country. After my set the Don Cornelius look-a-like host introduced some feature entertainers that brought back some old classic dances via a little Crowd interaction. DJ Toad from Ohio came in to close the last 45 minutes of the party with more videos. Taking the same stage the following night were Coolio and Sugarhill Gang (honestly not the best performances I've seen), then the 3rd night was DJ Kool came in to DJ and sing his "Let me Clear my Throat!". That was a great show.

One of the Most Inspiring Couples I've ever worked for

David & Susan had a Nov 21 wedding scheduled at the Lodge at Torrey Pines for about 6 months and just 3 weeks prior were both involved in a horrific car accident leaving David on crutches with a broken leg and Susan in a wheelchair with a broken pelvis. What is notable about these 2 amazing individuals is that Susan is an accomplished Triathlete and David has nearly finished his training to become a Navy Seal. He was scheduled to graduate the day before the wedding, but was delayed until after his recovery is complete. Obviously these are 2 life paths that demand endurance and determination and rather than postpone the wedding until it could be the picturesque event that everyone wanted for them, they kept to the plan. With the help of Liz Beck, the Wedding Coordinator, a few alterations and adjustments were incorporated to make the event memorable and entertaining for the family and guests in attendance. I acted as the DJ and Emcee and played a nice variety of dance music to fit the group including the Philadelphia tradition - Mummers Parade (see: red umbrellas in video clip) and Eve Seles came in to perform "Happy, Crappy, Sappy Love Songs" Here show is great, its all the great sing-a-long songs that you love to hate. Small Wedding at the Thursday Club

A nice wedding of at the Thursday Club in Point Loma. A large percentage of the guests were from Oregon and being in the heart of College Football Season, the families had me updating scores for the Oregon and Oregon State Games. Both teams won so I don't know if that lead to the great party that followed dinner but the party was great. Take a look at the video clip, Grandma dancing to Lady Gaga, the old College Sorority girls (and their Guys) singing TNT by AC DC or the Piano Man finale at the end of the night this group partied, danced and had a great time.

Wedding at the Kiko House in Carlsbad

The Kiko house is a beautiful vacation rental on the Carlsbad coast and the location for the Photo shoot for this year's Charger Girls Calendar. The house is amazing. Newly remodeled, they spared no expense on the features and amenities, right down to the elevated Plexiglas hot tub and the glass elevator.

Wes and Tammy had about the most amount of people they could fit for a seated dinner in this house. They started with a small ceremony on the private beach and moved to dinner in the lower level and dancing on the mid level.

San Diego Zoo Employees - Party Like Animals!

I'm sure you can imagine that when a group of 1500 employees and their guests that spend their days catering to visitors at a world renowned attraction like the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, they really know how to have fun. What's great about DJing an employee party like this is that, the HR and Special Event staff at the Zoo knows every DJ in town, and they chose me to play and create the perfect atmosphere to show their employees the appreciation they deserve. I was honored to be their choice.
Paradise Point Resort was the location and the party took full use of the resorts facilities. Dinner in the large ballroom, a Karaoke lounge in one of the side rooms and Video DJ in all 4 sections of the Sunset Ballroom overlooking the water.
As dinner came to an end the crowd started flowing into the Sunset Ballroom and before I knew it there were about 700 people dancing and having a good time to a mix of Hip Hop, 70's, 80's and they partied until the end.

Classic Wedding at The Lodge at Torrey Pines

Judd & Terri had a nice wedding this very classic yet simple. The Coordinator - Sabrina Cadini of La Dolce Idea, did a great job of keeping everything on track.

They had a very nice 4 course dinner with their best man's toast, a full table of cupcakes in place of the tradtional wedding cake and then some dancing afterward.

I got some nice comments from Judd just after the event...

Spencer was great. He received compliments from professional musicians attending our wedding as guests. It doesn't get any better than that. The music was up beat and people were dancing throughout the evening. He was easily able to balance the interests of children and young adults as well as our older guests. Everyone was dancing together all night long.

My Radio on air alter ego, Dr Boogie (TM) from Magic 92.5 FM had me playing as the closing act after R&B Singer Teedra Moses. She's primarily an East Coast Artist, but she's got a long list of credits that you would recognize including song writing for Mary J Blige, Macy Gray and Support Rolls for R Kelly, Will Smith and No Doubt.

I was booked to play old school (like we play on Magic 92.5) videos and the crowd loved it. The best feature of my Video DJ performance still continues to be my wide variety of Videos or different music genres.

This party was fun but I have to admit, it was a new experience for me. Anthology is a Live music show club, not a dance club and consequently the audience comes to see a performance, that was the first time I have ever been "The Show" I'm usually called in to create the dance atmosphere of a party or Night Club.

Customized Rock n' Roll / Video DJ Wedding at the Hard Rock Hotel

Chris and Jennifer went all out on their Rock n Roll themed wedding, I have to give the credit to her wedding planner Jessica Gillon for really making it all come to life. Their Ceremony was on the 4th Floor Woodstock Terrace featured a close friend of theirs singling and playing the keyboard for their music selections. The Cocktail reception was also on the terrace separated by Garden Decor and was all Coldplay, Uncle Cracker and the Killers.

When the guests were invited down to the Legends Ballroom, they were treated to the works. Photobooth complete with costume hats and feather boas, Record shaped Menu cards and actual records (with their personal label of course) as table number signs, the Late Night Party Donut Station and I Video DJ 'd on the Main stage. With the Rock n' roll theme we got to have a lot of fun with the Background music videos, and they had a few close friends that offered some of the best toasts I'd heard in a while, the kind where the audience laughs and cries all within 4-5 minutes. After dinner it didn't take much effort to get the group up and dancing, I was scheduled to play dance music for about 45 minutes to make way for the Closing Act, but once we got going they pushed the final act back a little.

Joey Cape was the Closer and if you aren't familiar with his work, I can best describe him as Jack Johnson meets Grunge, sort of. I have to admit I was a little worried about having a down tempo Acoustic act close the party. Completely the opposite, the group were BIG fans. The keyboard player for the ceremony had actually collaborated on a song for Joey's recent album. I don't usually offer live band PA due to the amount of work involved but Joey was super nice and it was only 3 microphones and 3 Instruments.

One of my favorite features about Video DJ is that I can take monograms, designs and logo and put them right on the screen. If you look on the screen behind Joey Cape in the video clip you'll see Chris and Jenn's logo for the wedding.

Destination Wedding at the Grand Del Mar

Brian & Courtney brought a few dozen people in from Phoenix for their wedding and really wanted to make it as much of a party as it was a traditional wedding reception.

They asked for DJ and Karaoke with Dance lighting and a custom Monogram projected on the wall (visible in the video clip).

This group really got into the party, the formalities included several introduction songs. Thunderstruck - ACDC for the Father of the Bride's Welcome toast; The Univ. of Arizona fight song for the groom toast and a fully choreographed dance by the bridal party to I got a Feeling- Black Eyed Peas to start the night off.

The Karaoke singers were... Entertaining. As with any party with karaoke there were some great singers and there were some that weren't as great but they definitely had fun with it. Dancing and singing til the end.

Sheraton San Diego - Harbor Island Wedding DJ

A Beautiful Mid-August Wedding at the Sheraton Harbor Island, right on the water in downtown San Diego. Austin & Lindsey had me share the entertainment duties with NRG a variety band that does a lot of Weddings and Corporate events here in Southern California. DJing with a band is a special task that not all DJs can handle (or are good at). The primary concern is that since the band only knows a few dozen songs or so, I have to be sure not to play anything on their playlist until they are finished with their last set. Some think that since the band knows a lot of Disco, Motown and Rock n Roll that the easy way to resolve this would be for the band to play the older music and the DJ to play the new music. That, in fact would be easiest but the new top 40 isn't necessarily or usually the best music to lead into a night with. The grandparents and aunts and uncles along with the rest of the older generation of guests, in my experience, really appreciate some music that they can relate and dance to. I usually find that when they get the music they know as a lead in, they dance more to the other music throughout the night. I try to play songs the band won't be playing but still play some songs that the older group will like before moving into the fun 80s and dance music that fits the younger guests like we had at this wedding.

Amber and Blue uplights and a Monogram in light (Gobo) on the dancfloor accented the room, with the stage and the sweetheart table in the center of the room it only left space for a long narrow dancefloor. The Video clips weren't able to capture the whole dancefloor in one frame. From the Grand Entrance to the Toast and Dancing, the night went off without a hitch thanks to Julie Scrivener the wedding planner. At the end of the night I got thank yous and compliments from both the Father of the Bride and the Bride and the Groom. That let me know I did exactly what was needed, played good music for everyone and kept the whole group engaged in the party.

Here is a post wedding comment I received from Lindsey the bride a few weeks after the event...
Spencer did a wonderful job selecting music and incorporating my
suggestions into the playlist. He also coincidentally chose the perfect
song for our last dance. It was a Coldplay song that Austin (Groom)
says was written for me. Bravo!

Rancho Bernardo Inn - Wedding DJ San Diego

Alex and Kristen had their reception for 250 guests. The RB Inn staff did a great job with a very elegant dinner. The evenings events were flawless with the coordination from Diane Kern from Exclusive Designs and Events. They had given me a small list of must play songs and also a handful of please don't play-songs and from there let me do what I do best, play the best songs for the crowd. There were a lot of family members from the midwest and they were really into the oldies and motown in particular, so I played a good mix of those along with some fun 80s, 90s and top 40 and it worked out perfectly. La Jolla Bridge Club

The La Jolla Bridge Club is a pretty cool place to have a wedding. The Ceremony area is just feet from the water, you can hear the waves crashing. Even though the park is a very popular family beach area during the summer months, there are enough bushes and trees to block the both the ceremony area and the main lawn from the public area. Due to the size of this group dinner was buffet style out on the lawn, inside the club only seats 50-75 guests, but I really think with good weather outside is the best option.

The City of La Jolla has some noise ordinances that restrict amplified music outside on the lawn, but there are some tricks of the trade to still accomplish some light background music and announcements. The dancing is always inside (again due to the noise ordinance), dancing in the main area is preferred since the ventilation in the parlor is minimal.

Terry & Amber hired Gayle Feallock of Just Imagine Weddings to coordinate their wedding. I've worked with Gayle a lot over the years and she's great, I highly recommend her if you're looking for a coordinator. OH! and the party was good too...

R&B Wedding

This couple wanted a twist on the traditional idea of their wedding reception. Held at the Rancho Valencia Resort in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, they asked to have all R&B music, from different eras was ok, but they really wanted to stay with the theme. I played a wide variety of music from The Temptations to Usher including Dinner music that was "A Soul Tribute to The Beatles" a great CD that has artists like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett singing R&B versions of Beatles songs.

The group danced all night and we even had a couple of party crashers that heard the party and came in to join the celebration. This was a great idea to make this event different, but you really have to be careful when selecting a theme like this and decide which is more important throughout the course of the party, staying with the theme or playing the type of music that the party needs even if it isn't in keeping with the theme.

Party Like a Rockstar - Video DJ - 80s Party

This party was awesome! It was Brett's 40th Birthday and ALL of the guests dressed up in 80's costumes and there were some really good ones too.

I played 80's music videos for the first hour or so. Then the 80's Band, Lipstick & Leather took the stage. They rocked the whole neighborhood for about an hour including Brett belting out a party rocking, Crowd stopping, Police Helicopter circling over head version of Nothing but a Good Time. Yes, it doesn't happen very often, but the house was in what seemed to me to be a pretty quite area and the 80's band and people yelling and screaming proved to be a little too much for some of the neighbors and the police came in at 10pm on the dot. I'm happy to report that I had not started to play dance music by the time the sherriff came by. They didn't order us to stop, just to turn it down, way down. The last hour of the party I opened up the music to the more current top 40 and hip hop, but the volume was so low it wasn't really danceable any more. I wish we had more time, the crowd was really into it. It's great when the people dancing on the dancefloor are dancing and having a good time, but you can notice them every time they hear a new song checking the screens to see the video.

San Diego Diamond View Tower

I love what I do, always new and exciting things to see and do. This is the view from the top of the Diamond View Tower overlooking Petco Park. The Padres were playing on the road this day but the Park in the Park is open for visitors even on off days. I've worked this location during games too which is really cool. You're so far above the field you can't really get into the game but its still the best view in the city.

The party was only for a couple dozen people but they were a really fun and outgoing group, it was a Grad party for 3 girls from Coronado High School. All 3 were active in the school theater so Karaoke was natural fit.

Chinese Wedding at the Four Seasons

bit more than some of the other venues but its a
true 5 star hotel from the facility to the service.

Corporate Party at the Ivy Hotel

United Bio Source hosted a party for their convention attendees at the open air rooftop bar at The Ivy Hotel and had me DJ. This was more of a club style presentation than I normally do for a wedding. It was the classic look similar to turntables, flat on a table. They were really interested in Video DJ but decided they needed to use the video screens for their logo and branding. It didn't matter the group of 300+ guests danced all night.

It was cool background music for the first hour then I started to pick up the pace a little bit and eventually it was a fun mix of all the new hits, Flo-Rida, Lady Gaga, LMFAO as well as the fun 80s and some Latin and House/Trance too. I spent several years DJing in Nightclubs as well as my Hip Hop radio mixshow and "The Digital Groove" radio show so this was a fun return to a mostly nightclub style party.

The mini video cam ran out of batteries and I didn't get very much footage before it died, but here is a little dance circle they had going at my end of the long narrow dance floor. Sorry the video is a little dark, partly from the lighting, partly from the low camera battery. It was great and went til almost 2am when the hotel finally said we had to stop for the night.

Scientists usually aren't known as the party crowd, but don't tell these guys!

Daytime Wedding

This couple decided on an early wedding, starting in the late afternoon going into the early evening. Their guests didn't seem to care, they danced anyway. This was one of those traditional wedding soundtrack parties. As I read the crowd and played music that followed their mood, I found myself playing a lot of those typical wedding dance songs.

As I always say, a Great DJ isn't one that always plays all the Hot New Music on the top 40 Radio Station that week or the most creative live mash-ups or music mixes. It's the one who plays the right songs at the right time to take that party to a level of success that the Guests, the Host and sometimes even the DJ didn't know was possible.

June 5th I played band breaks at the V lounge, all old school. Its a pretty casual environment since people really just take a break from gambling to come over to eat, drink and dance. But it was fun and stayed pretty busy all night.

Peter & Tianey Shin

This was a great small family wedding, both Peter and Tianey are Korean and many of the attendees made the trip from overseas (korea and a few other countries in the area). Rachel Penichi of Plan-It San Diego always does a great job and this particular wedding happened to fall in her birthday. From experience I knew that it could be difficult to really get this party up to full speed, social dancing just doesn't seem as big in some asian cultures as others.

They had a great time and danced a lot. Peter, the groom, came back after walking his new bride to their suite and thanked me personally. Despite over 15 years of experience, the biggest song of the night surprised me. Hava Nagila; and despite the fact that neither the bride or groom were Jewish, Peter's college buddies, talked him into asking me to play it and they lifted them each in a chair and we did the Hora... at a Korean wedding...

As long as they enjoyed themselves, that's all that's important.

Video DJ at The Scripps Seaside Forum at UCSD

WOW! If you haven't seen this amazing new property, you really have to stop by and take a look around. Its right next to the La Jolla Pier in La Jolla, its right on the water and the full length glass doors open and fold away for a 1 one of a kind view. Its on Discovery Way in La Jolla and even if you aren't planning a party you can go down park and walk along the water, its great.

The venue is so new, this was the first private event they've had, not including a couple of industry events and Grand opening parties.

This party was for The La Jolla High School Foundation, they're a group of parents and alumni raising money to help fund some of the programs no longer covered by the state (Arts, Sports, Etc.). French Gourmet catered the party and did a great job as always. I brought in (2) 42" Flatscreens, a 12ft x 14ft projection screen and 4 speakers spread around the room and outdoor patio. Kerri the Event Chairperson said one of the things they wanted, was to make sure the party wasn't boring, that it was exciting and fun enough that people would talk about it through the year and look forward to next years fundraiser.

The night started with a cocktail reception and silent auction, dinner and a live auction followed by the party. Early in the evening we used the screens to show music videos mixed with a Thank you slide show for the sponsors.

Video DJ is so much fun. It takes a great DJ performance and adds that visual element, to really get the crowd engaged in the party. I still get a kick out of watching the people as they dance, some people dance while they keep one eye on the screen watching the video of the song they're dancing to, others try to sneak peaks at the screen while trying not to ignore their dance partner.

Video DJ Wedding

From the first time I sat down with Russel and Charlotte, they were really into the idea of having me Video DJ their wedding reception. They were a really nice couple and pulled out all the stops for their big day. Everything from all out floral arrangements and the "Mad Dash" video montage (the videographer shoots footage of the ceremony and then edits it to make it a part of the video montage to be viewed after dinner at the reception) to Dual Spotlights on the First Dance and a Jazz Trio for the Cocktail Reception. Red LED uplights really helped transform the room and compliment the red roses in the florals, the Party Donuts station (http://www.partydonuts.com/) and Photo Booth in the foyer were both a big hit as well.

Video DJ was perfect for this party, the 220 guests were mostly in their 20s and 30s with the 40+ group making up only about 30% of guests. Video DJ delivers that trendy, fresh interactive entertainment that fits that group perfectly.

The night started with a big grand entrance of 52 people, the guests were really riled up by the time the Bride and Groom came in. On to dinner and a performance by the Samahan Philippine Dance Company (Authentic cultural dances). Dual spot lights were set and ready for the Mother/Son and Father/Daughter Dances, the groom then cut in to begin their first dance.

By the time the dancefloor was opened, they were ready. They were on the floor in seconds...

The only thing I would have changed is we had so much to do in such a short time, we didn't really get to do a lot of dancing until later after the Mad Dash Video Montage, the Cake the Bouquet Toss, the Garter Toss and Money Dance.

The Crossings in Carlsbad

This was an amazing party. I think this was the 6th time I had played parties and receptions for with this family (Slocomb, Castillo). First there were weddings for several siblings, then a couple of cousins and most recently Tony & Maria. The Crossings is a fantastic new venue in Carlsbad, with vaulted wooden ceilings and the spacious layout inside, it reminds me of the the Lodge at Torrey Pines.
What I love about this family is they and their guests love to dance and party. While most events I play for, whether I perform as a Traditional DJ or Video DJ, have good dance floors and a the guests have fun. This family really loves their music. I played everything from Earth Wind & Fire to Snoop Dogg, I even worked in a request for The Cure. I'll admit that playing the Cure is always a tricky thing for me at an event. I feel like The Cure is an acquired taste, some people love them and others have a quite different opinion. But I took the request into consideration and just waited to see if the right time to work it in arose and sure enough, it did and was just the right compliment to the other music they were having so much fun with. [Ok I confess I did mix out of the song before the end. ALWAYS LEAVE THEM WANTING MORE Right?]

DJ at the Prado

Danny and Diana had a big party for their wedding at the Prado in Balboa Park. I provided Traditional DJ, Dance Lighting and a custom Gobo projecting their initials in light on the dancefloor.

Danny told me in our initial meeting that he really wanted a lot of 90's and current music, everything from hip hop to 90's house music. He and Diana both understood the value of playing some music to appeal to the parents and grandparents so I played some old school and of course some latin. Cumbia, Merengue and even some Banda, they were a great crowd and danced for almost 3 hours after dinner and the other formalities were finished.

I know some DJs play the same "set" week in and week out, varying only slightly for requests, I honestly can't imagine not offering my clients that flexibility of playing the best songs for their guests. I do find myself playing some songs more than others but never as a preplanned set.

If you are looking for a location to have an event, you can't go wrong with the Prado. If you've ever been to the Prado restaurant... their special event catering is even better, I don't know what they do differently but The Prado is right up there in the top 3-4 on-site caters in San Diego.

San Diego State University Guest Speaker

This was a great party! My 2 best dancers, Jonny and Lexi were on their 'A' game. This party was for about thirty 12-13 year olds and about 35-40 adults. We brought in blue uplighting along with some dance lighting. It really helped bring the room's decor together. A few games, candlelighting, a slide show all followed up with a great dance party for both the adults and kids.

If you're planning a Bar or Bat Mitzvah you really have to take your time and find the right entertainment. Whether it's a DJ, Video DJ or a Band, the right entertainment is crucial to the outcome of the party. As the client or buyer, you have to be honest about your expectations for the party. Do you want a casual event for the guests to visit with each other, do you want to throw the best party you or any of the guests have ever been to or something in between? Will you be happy if the guests don't dance and party? If you are creating a casual hang around style party then you can probably get by with some minimal entertainment options. If you are throwing an all out Celebration, you need to invest more in the entertainment, therefore further ensuring that the rest of your investment in the party is protected. I've heard from people who chose to hire a DJ based on price and not necessarily quality, and one of the things they all say is that they wish they would have set aside more of their budget for entertainment.

I'm proud to have been a sponsor of the San Diego and Carlsbad MS Walk-a-thons for the past 10 years. I provide music and make announcements at the rest stop. This gives the walkers a chance to rest, get water, energy bars etc. before walking the remaining part of the course to the finish line. It gives the walkers a pick me up, they even dance as they pass by. Most years the amount raised at each walk increases. In this slow economy I don't know if we'll set a new record this year but the enthusiasm was certainly as high as ever.

San Diego native Lil Rob and Jammin' Z-90FM give a free concert to Southwest High School.

Having been a mix DJ with Z-90 and still with sister station Magic 92.5, I've become somewhat of the go to person for on location Sound Systems. Z-90 periodically conducts contests for the local high schools to win a free concert at their school. The date and artist are always kept a secret until the last possible moment. But it's always either the Hot artist with the hot new song or sometimes a classic artist with a long list of smash hits. Past artists include Paula DeAnda, Lil Rob, Soulja Boy and Warren G. April 3rd San Diego's own Lil Rob returns and puts on two 20 minute shows for the students of Southwest High School and Mobile Music Plus was there to make it all come together. Delivering a 6000+ Watt sound system the concert was a huge success.

The show was a huge hit! Anseth Richards of the Bridal Bar San Diego (www.bridalbar.com) orchestrates a very special approach to the standard bridal show we've all seen again and again. It's an open area/party style format complete with music, food, decor and fun. This show was held at the new Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. The party was on the 4th floor patio area.
I was showcasing Video DJ (www.mobilemusicplus.com) with 4 screens. The doors opened at noon and almost immediately, we saw a lot of brides and guests coming out and sitting on the lounge furniture provided by Plush Impressions, enjoying the sunshine and beautiful weather. French Gourmet provided the Bar and Mini Slider, food station. Our friends at LA Photo Party (www.laphotoparty.com) were taking our fun & upbeat music atmosphere and turning it into a fashion show photo shoot. It was a lot of fun, attendees were coming to visit the patio, hanging out for awhile, then going to visit the booths inside the main room, then returning back out to eat drink and sit int he sun. At 5pm the show ended and we hosted the vendor/exhibitor appreciation party.... Its a real compliment when wedding and special event professionals come out and you can see that they are really enjoying the music and atmosphere. Since their job takes them into parties on a regular basis and it usually takes a lot to entertain them.

Several times each year, Morning Show hosts Jagger & Christie host listener events. Most recently was the Valentine's Hook up cruise. Another word for a single's cruise on board one of the Hornblower Cruises and Events Company's boats on the bay. Our Listeners always show up ready to have fun and this time was no exception.

Mobile Music Plus provides entertainment to El Torito Restaurant in Mission Valley. I was asked to play for a small Quinceanera in back area of the Restaurant. It was mostly family a dozen or so friends and Future star of Dancing with the Stars Dance competition (see the video). I played a good mixture of Top 40/Hip Hop, Latin and Old School.

Animal House / Faber College Theme Party - Video DJ

This Birthday party for Tom's 50th was a Toga theme party, fashioned after the Animal House Movie, and WOW! the guests at this party really got into it. College Sweaters and creatively designed togas were everywhere.

I brought in the Video DJ system and dual 42" LCD screens for entertainment and played 50's and 60's music videos. This party really gave me a chance to show what the video DJ can do. All of the unique music videos that aren't available to the general public, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, the Mamas & the Papas, James Brown and more. As the party progressed I included some other genres of dance music too but with the Animal House Theme I had to play "Shout" by the Otis Day and the Knights. Most danced, some watched... When I see people staring in amazement at the screens not able to believe that I have the videos that I have or in disbelief of the quality of those videos, I don't know which... but it's really one of the coolest parts of what I do. SDGE told the party hosts that power would be turned off between 10-10:30 for scheduled work on the system. A special generator was brought in just to keep the party going. We had such a great time, that before we knew it the party was at its scheduled end time. That left us with no choice but to go longer... This one would've made Dean Wormer jealous.
